In 1990, the Department of Communication created a Masters
of Arts degree program. Since 1991, we have graduated
more than 100 people from the master's program. Nearly half of our
graduates live outside of Texas. About a quarter of our
graduates have entered doctoral programs in communication,
as well as other professional programs, such as law and
ministry. Another quarter of our masters graduates have
taken teaching positions (in community and liberal arts
colleges, as well as universities) in Texas, Arkansas,
California, Kansas, Missouri, New York, Ohio, and elsewhere.
The largest portion of our graduates are working in positions
including management, training, sales, and research in
business and industry with organizations that encompass
business, health care, government and non-profits. Some
of the corporations that have employed our graduate alumni
are Accenture, American Airlines, Compaq, EDS Corporation,
Eli Lilly & Company,
LaFace Records, and Prudential Insurance. Government employers
have included the Texas Department of Human Services, the
Texas State Legislature, the Panama Canal Authority, and
the F.B.I. Non-profit organizational employers include
the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association,
American Management Association, Center for Public Leadership
Studies (at A&M), Inter-Ethnic Forum, International
Communication Association, National Mentoring Partnership,
Scott and White Health Care, United Way, Workers Compensation
Fund, and others.
In Fall 1998, we admitted our inaugural class in the
newly-approved Ph.D. program. In the last few years, more than a dozen doctoral degrees have been granted. Our doctoral graduates now hold positions in academia (e.g., University of Montreal, Ohio University, Colorado State University, University of Kentucky) as well as in industry and government.
